Now there’s another way to look at fast food. How about fast bucks for volunteer fire companies?
At least that’s how Andrew Poley, assistant chief of Swedesburg Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1, is viewing an upcoming fundraiser at Wendy’s Restaurant in the Henderson Square Shopping Center on Henderson Road in King of Prussia.
The fundraiser at Wendy’s will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 28. Part of the proceeds taken in during that time will be donated to the fire company.
This is the first time that Swedesburg FC has used the services of a local fast-food restaurant to raise money and, said Poley, “we are very enthused about it; it could be the new quick fundraiser of the future. Ordinarily it takes a lot of volunteer hours to put on a fundraiser at the station.” In the course of the year, he noted, Swedesburg FC puts on a number of fundraising events, most of them highly labor-intensive. As examples, he cited Friday-night dinners, basket bingo, the Valentine’s sweetheart breakfast and dance, and turkey raffles.
In the past, other fire companies have hooked up with restaurants for fundraising events but they were a lot more complicated. Poley cited one instance where a fire company posted a coupon on its Web site. In order to earn a donation, a resident had to print out the coupon and present it to the server at the restaurant. The Wendy’s fundraiser couldn’t be simpler, he said. “All you do is encourage your family and friends to show up at the restaurant during the promotion period and buy something; the restaurant does all the work. Buy enough Baconators,” he added, “and we can outfit a firefighter with a full uniform.”
Fortunately, Poley added, the Wendy’s fundraiser was particularly easy to arrange, because the manager of the Henderson Road restaurant actually approached the fire company and volunteered to help.
